Yayoi Kusama Inspired Lesson

Today’s lesson for student’s was inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama. Students learned interesting facts about Kusama’s upbringing, inspiration and early career.

  • Yayoi was born in Japan in March 1929

  • Yayoi’s family owned a flower and vegetable farm and were an early source of inspiration for her

  • She moved to New York City in 1950 where she broke into the art scene

  • Kusama is well known for her usage of dots throughout her entire body of work

  • She makes paintings, sculptures, and even live instillations with polka dots

  • She is known as the princess of polka dots



Student’s then viewed some of Kusama’s most famous paintings and then created their own version of her instillation “The Flower That Blooms in My Heart” on construction paper using an array of supplies.


Supplies needed:

  • Construction paper

  • Markers

  • Crayons

  • Glue

  • Pom-poms

  • Scissors
